Patience Agbabi, author, poet, and activist, discusses the impact of today’s choices on the future with Facing History UK’s Programme Associate Michelle Perkins. This event was made possible by Renaissance One.
Christiana Figueres is a Costa Rican citizen and was the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2010 - 2016. During her tenure, Ms. Figueres brought together diverse groups to jointly deliver the historic 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change, for which she is credited with forging a new brand of collaborative diplomacy. Since then Ms. Figueres has continued to foster rapid action on climate change. She is the co-author of The Future We Choose: The Stubborn Optimist's Guide to the Climate Crisis (Penguin Random House 2019) and co-host of the podcast Outrage + Optimism. She sits on the Board of ACCIONA and Impossible Foods.
Tom Rivett-Carnac co-founded Global Optimism together with Christiana Figueres in 2017, when the pair departed the UN, having successfully secured the historic Paris Agreement on Climate Change. During his tenure at the UN, Tom ran political strategy, prior to which he was President of CDP North America. Tom co-authored the bestselling book, The Future We Choose with Christiana Figueres and co-hosts a lively weekly podcast Outrage + Optimism. He serves as an advisor on delivering climate ambition to some of the world’s most influential corporations and philanthropic leaders.
Patience Agbabi FRSL is a celebrated poet best known for her fourth collection, Telling Tales, an exuberant retelling of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Now she has turned her talents to writing for children aged 8 to ∞. The Leap Cycle is a thrilling time-travel adventure series. The debut novel, The Infinite, was CBBC Book of the Month for July 2020 and was recently longlisted for the Branford Boase Award 2021. Philip Pullman said of it: ‘Vivid, funny, exciting and inventive…Patience Agbabi has created something fresh and original here, and I look forward very much to what she writes next.’ The sequel, The Time-Thief, is fresh off the press in May 2021.
Razia Iqbal is one of the main presenters of Newshour, the flagship news and current affairs programme on BBC World Service. She also regularly presents The World Tonight on BBC Radio 4. She was the BBC's arts correspondent for a decade, covering arts and culture for radio and television news. She also presented Talking Books on BBC World TV: an in depth interview programme with leading writers.
Razia has been a journalist with the BBC for nearly three decades, and has worked as a political reporter and as a foreign correspondent in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Yazzie Min is a spoken word artist, poet, facilitator and activist. Yazzie founded the Stand for Humanity movement in 2016 to challenge apathy around social justice and invite people to recognise their power as individuals to make change. Through her work Yazzie uses her creativity to create mindset shifts; she believes this is where the most vital work needs to be done for the benefit of people and planet. Whether through performance poetry, as a speaker, facilitating workshops or building communities, Yazzie's goal of true Oneness remains the constant throughout.
